Collision Conference
21 Apr, 2021 12:00 am (EET)Many of the recent studies of ethics in AI, detecting bias, and practicing Responsible AI have been focused on highlighting issues and problems. Many such studies have been also been rife with controversy and even resistance from the large players in AI. Getting the CEOs of the largest internet, e-commerce and social media companies to testify before the U.S. Congress around their companies’ practices is becoming the norm. With AI growing in its use and impact in many areas of digital life, including FinTech, Manufacturing, Gaming, Entertainment, Commerce, Search, Navigation, Healthcare, Communications, Utilities/Infrastructure, and of course intelligence, surveillance, and military applications, we are increasingly faced with issues of fairness and ethics of algorithms that are playing increasing roles in supporting or replacing human decision-making tasks. This panel will present examples of these issues, and will aim to address the issue of the pragmatic way forward – How do we account for the good work coming out of algorithmic audits and graduate to recommendations on practice, mitigation, and policy/regulation that allow us to use the technology the “right way” while minimizing the big pitfalls? The proper answers require an understanding of the science and technology, with their limitations and the law and ethics associated to them and how we should co-exist with these emerging systems.
