Fadi Tannous

“If governed properly, data can be one of the most valuable assets a company has”. This statement, not only exemplifies the work that Open Insights does, it also is what Fadi Tannous, director of data science at Open Insights, believes in.

Fadi led his first hackathon when he was 13 years old, when he won, it cemented his love for data science. A couple decades later, he leads the data science efforts at Open Insights, focused on leveraging open source technologies to deliver practical solutions with cutting edge performance. Day to day, he leans into his love for all things computers and designs and supervises the implementation of machine learning solutions at Open Insights.

Fadi specializes in developing and maintaining distributed state-of-the-art machine learning solutions at enterprise scale. Fadi has seven years of experience designing algorithms in areas of natural language processing, content personalization, real-time recommendation engines and computer vision; enabling companies to apply machine learning to improve their customer experience, operational efficiency and monetization capabilities.

Over the last seven years, Fadi has recruited, trained and led data scientists focused on delivering incremental learning models and advanced analytics platforms.

One of the projects that excited him most, was his initiative to build and deliver Analytics, Visualization and Data Science courses at a leading regional bank. He also piloted the development of an incremental sequence-aware hybrid recommendation engine that delivers real-time content personalization for a high-traffic e-commerce website. He developed an advanced character recognition solution that tackles glare and visual irregularities using deep learning.

Fadi is inspired by the intellectual challenge of building machine learning solutions. He is passionate about being at the forefront of technology advancements and can often be found reading books, articles, and having in depth conversations with anyone and everyone. His love for learning leads to him being the excited brainstormer, consistently starting conversations and hot takes over the office’s Thursday morning breakfasts where he most enjoys the hummus. As a team lead, he is eager to build a sustainable data science department and hire leading global talent. He also believes in AI being an accessible service to companies across the globe, and across all verticals.

Outside of the office, he enjoys long hackathons, playing squash and traveling. His love for travel is part of the reason he is inspired to work at Open Insights every day. Our international offices give him an opportunity to work with colleagues and clients from around the world.

“Since I was in school, I have been fascinated by computers – I started programming with Visual Basic and C, got hooked, and ever since haven’t looked back”.
Once he graduated from university, Ashwath began working on a software licensing product team, where he fell in love with product focused companies. His experience at his first company set the tone for the rest of his career, where he continued to focus on product first companies.
In 2008, Ashwath’s passion for the space grew when he had the opportunity to start working with Hadoop and Amazon Web Services (AWS), two technologies that were rapidly changing the data and tech landscape. He was most excited about the use cases in which these technologies could change lives, in all aspects.
His path led him to Open Insights for a few reasons. First and foremost, he had experience working with Usama and Faizan, and had both a deep respect for them and implicit trust in them. Second, he knew it was an organization where he could grow and develop professionally, and have access to companies, industries and verticals that were changing lives. Lastly, the collaboration with the team, based across the world, and customer teams, also based across the world, meant that work would always be exciting.

At Open Insights, Ashwath is the VP of engineering, where he focuses on the consulting vertical, data science, and the data academy. His day to day activities include finding the best practices for refining and optimizing the software development life cycle, tightens information security and protects the company from cyberattacks and makes data usable. With the data academy, he trains organizations to analyze and interpret data to drive faster, better business decisions and discover new insights.

Outside of work, Ashwath loves all sports (but loves soccer the most) – especially given its his most frequented stress buster.

Mantra: “Never Settle” because it reminds me to not get stuck in my comfort zone, to continuously challenge myself while exploring my potential and to put in the work to be the best version of myself. .
